SANDRA LUCÍA CASTAÑEDA

Sandra Lucía

CASTAÑEDA

Sibaté - Colombia, 1972

Sandra is a mixed media artist, born in Bogotá and raised in Sibaté - Colombia, now based in Minneapolis, USA. A founding member of the Priƒmata Collective, her work is deeply influenced by her studies and teaching in Philosophy, Latin American History and Literature. This academic background informs her exploration of some of the most complex and existential themes in human experience: insania, the cyclical dance of life and death, the clash of order and chaos, and the haunting concept of eternal recurrence.

Sandra’s creations are fueled by a deep existential curiosity about the human condition, with each piece acting as both an inquiry and a reflection on the most profound contradictions of existence. Her work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions, including her solo exhibition Extraordinary Diologues at the Carnegie Art Center Mankato (2017) and group shows at the same institution (2015-2016). She has also exhibited at The Hallberg Center for the Arts in Black & White (2023), participated in The 9th Annual Black & White Art Show, and been featured in Latina and Latinx MN: Re/claiming Space in Times of Change at The Catherine G. Murphy Gallery (2024). One of her photographs was chosen as the cover of the dossier "Bodies and aesthetics of madness", Corpo-ografías Magazine of the Universidad Distrital, Colombia (Vol. 5, No. 5: Jan.-Dec. 2018).

Currently, Sandra is immersed in a new installation project, pushing the boundaries of her practice to explore even deeper philosophical and conceptual realms. Through her distinctive use of mixed media, Sandra continues to challenge her viewers, inviting them to engage with the timeless questions that shape our understanding of the world and our place within it.
